CROYDE OCEAN TRIATHLON FUNDRAISING HEROES

The Croyde Ocean Triathlon being held on 14th July 2024 will be the second year that the stunning and savage event will be donating 100% of the profits to charity.  This event held in the beautiful North Devon coastline aims to have an impact on its community by not only holding a fun, exciting and sustainable event but by raising much needed funds for charities at the same time.

This event is our biggest fundraiser of the year! We offer charity places for anyone to take up, with an offered split of any proceeds 50/50 with Plastic Free North Devon and the charity of the participants choice. The event is also directly supporting local charities: Family Compass, Royal Devon’s Hospital Charity and Children's Hospice South West by offering full charity places enabling them to receive 100% of their fundraising targets.

Jo Hibberd, Race Director says: ‘Working with the community is an integral part of how we work here at the Croyde Ocean Triathlon. From local lifeguards being on duty and giving advice to the team of volunteers that kindly help us run the day. Using the event to help more charities raise funds is just an extension of this. We really want to encourage more fundraisers than ever to take up this challenge and if not head to the fundraising page and make a donation to help them meet their fundraising targets!’

So far our entrants are raising money for: Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, FiG (Families in Grief), Royal British Legion, British Heart Foundation, Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club, Blue Marine Foundation , Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, The Wave Project and The Warmley Wheelers with many more in the pipeline.

Here are some of those who have taken on the epic challenge to raise money for their chosen charity and PFND …

Hannah, Luke and Anna are raising money as a team for the Brain Tumor Support after Luke’s life was turned upside down in 2017 when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. When recovering from  major surgery and extensive radiotherapy it became clear that his active and healthy lifestyle plays a huge part in his body’s ability to continue to fight the tumor and Brain Tumor Support are still supporting Luke on his journey with free therapy and independant calls. Hannah will be swimming, Luke is taking on the hilly cycle and Anna will be finishing with the trail run.

Thomas Pate is raising money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and this is why he chose this charity alongside Plastic Free North Devon:

‘Having lost my father at such a young age to heart disease, I feel passionate about the research BHF do, and I hope my contributions to the charity help others going through this terrible disease. Little did I know being around 8 years old, this disease would not only impact my life forever, but hundreds of thousands around me.

Of PFND Tom stated ‘Being out in the natural environment is a huge must for me, it is so important to relax, unwind and destress. Therefore, keeping our great North Devon coastlines clean is a must.’

Lucie Sheard is taking on the Croyde Tri after stumbling upon it while on holiday one summer. She is raising money for the Warmly Wheelers, alongside PFND,  which is a cycling scheme that gives everyone a chance to get into cycling - a sport which has become close to my heart and I truly believe has the power to transform lives. Set up in 2014, this Bristol scheme provides cycling opportunities for people with health conditions and supported needs. Relying on donations and volunteers, they offer specialist equipment and a safe, friendly environment to assist people who would normally find it difficult to ride a bike. Lucie says ‘The course has thrown storms and heat waves at me so far... so I'm excited to see what this year has in store!’

Phoebe Charnely is raising money for The Blue Marine Foundation  and says “Both these charities have a great impact on our environment and oceans, committed to creating a better place! I am competing in my first ever Tri in Devon in support of these two charities, please support me on this silly adventure!”

Hamish Johnstone is raising funds for Family Compass. He says about his fundraising: “There is a mental health crisis among young people right now and it's never been more important to help them get the support they need, when they need it. The Croyde Triathlon is super tough, but it's even tougher facing challenges with your mental health and there being no-one who can help.”

Connor Bacon is raising 100% of his total  for Plastic Free North Devon

“The Plastic Free North Devon community is something I have been well aware of and having Croyde as such a major part of our life really brings it home. It's no secret that plastic is one of the biggest threats to our planet and especially our oceans and beaches, however it's all a major part of our lives, I'm 99.99% sure that if you're reading this you have plastic in your hand or on your person... That's just the way it is at the moment, but that doesn't mean we can't stop pushing to reduce the use where possible.”
