WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A COMMUNITY GROUP

It’s amazing what you can achieve if you work as a team, particularly if you have a good feel for what could be done in your neighbourhood.  After all, who is better suited to bring about the right sort of transformation somewhere than the people who live there?

If you are part of a local community group and want to do more to tackle the issue of plastic pollution then Plastic Free North Devon can help you with ideas, information, practical support and connect you with other groups doing the same sort of thing.  Here’s a list of the support we can offer, do get in touch if you would like some help:

  • Talks and film screenings to raise awareness of the issue.

  • Sharing best practice and advice to help you plan your own local campaign.

  • Delivering education packages to local schools and youth groups.

  • Equipment and advice on running litter cleans.

Most community groups start with simple steps to remove single use plastic items from their own activities (could everyone bring their own reusable cup and water bottle to your meetings?) before going on to do more within their wider community.

We can also provide an educational event stand and water bar for any events that your community may hold. An Events toolkit has been created to help guide the community group in eliminating single use plastics from such events.

Our two case studies below give you an idea for the sort of measures that you can take.

Surfers Against Sewage also run a national Plastic Free Communities campaign.  This provides a framework for action in communities which engages with local government, schools and businesses.  It’s a great start-point and you can find out more about it on the link below.
