Easter reflection and action

It’s EASTER. The sun is shining, the spring flowers are sprouting, and the birds are singing. Those of us lucky enough to live  in North Devon for this lock down are feeling quite spoiled to have some pretty epic spots all within walking or cycling distance. It means that 1 hour spent outside has turned from something we may have taken for granted, into something incredibly special and valuable.

However, in these weird and uncertain times, we also feel a little uneasy, overwhelmed, and sad as we contemplate the situation of others. Whether it’s people losing loved ones, or businesses and individuals facing difficult financial situations, or the children and adults faced with domestic violence at home, we send you strength, and hope you are able to reach out to support groups at this time.

We send our sincere gratitude to the key workers across so many different sectors that are working overtime in difficult and challenging conditions. We hope that society recognises your importance and hard work, and that dramatic changes are made once this crisis is over.

With the countryside so readily on our doorstep, we also think of the many people stuck indoors in small spaces, with no garden, or with limited green areas around them. For us, stepping outside and truly treasuring fresh air on a walk, run, or cycle is only made more beautiful by the North Devon backdrop. We are acknowledging nature now more than ever, and we are truly grateful for it.

It’s a chance for us to look at what nature is giving us, and ask ourselves, “what are we giving back?”. Times of great change such as these are also opportunities to hit the reset button on situations for the future. A chance for us to improve not only the well-being of ourselves and our key work-forces, but the planet itself. Let’s not waste it.

We are really looking forward to the time when we are able to bring the community back together through beach cleans, film nights and our presence at events. But until, then it’s up to you.

There is so much you can do to keep pushing environmental causes and community collaborations forward during this time.

  • Check out the North Devon Biosphere’s Pledge for Planet project. This new campaign aims to galvanise community action for nature’s recovery across the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere. It’s fun, and easy to get involved with. Register your pledge on their website and share your photos using the #pledgeforplanet! The season of spring brings optimism through longer days and sunnier weather and the April activities include:

  • Creating a wildflower patch

  • Nature ID challenge

  • Create a garden for insects which is more wildlife friendly and full of nectar-rich varieties of plants

  • Care for nature by litter picking wherever you are! You could even show a layby some love and share your efforts using the #loveyourlayby

  • Beaford archive - Beaford are compiling a here-and-now archive to record life during lockdown . It’s pretty fascinating stuff, and will inform many of the pages in the history books to come. Send in pictures that answer the question “What are you experiencing right now?”

  • Support local businesses - Our #LookLocal campaign celebrates all the businesses going over and above to keep you supplied with everything you need during this time.  https://www.plasticfreenorthdevon.org/directory. From gardening supplies to fruit and veggie boxes, and donuts to your door - it really does have it all! Stay posted via our social channels for daily updates and shout outs too.

  • Join your local Covid support network - there are many across Barnstaple, Braunton, South Molton, Bideford, and Ilfracombe

  • Donate to your local food bank

  • Use your voice - Write to your MP about important issues. If there is something you've been wanting to bring up, now is the time! Sign the petitions that mean something to you. Share a story on your social platforms - It all makes a differene

  • Switch to a renewable energy supplier

  • Move your money to an ethical bank

  • Learn more about environmental issues that are important to you.

  • Get involved -  become a volunteer (now or after the crisis)

Above all, take the time to slow down, reflect and take it easy. Look out for yourself and others around you, and know that this time will pass.

Sending loads of virtual hugs, from the team at Plastic Free North Devon.
