North Devon grows wild and plastic free for RHS Hampton Court Palace
Celebrating all things edible, Diary of a Lady Gardener has partnered with local charity Plastic Free North Devon to educate on the use of plastic in the garden, and the importance of protecting our soils and connecting with nature at RHS Hampton Court Palace 2022.
Named ‘Protect our playground’ after one of our most prominent PFND campaigns, the 6m x 3m allotment site at the world’s largest flower show, will be filled with edible flowers, fruits and vegetables, as well as structures created from repurposed materials.
Shannon Keary, otherwise known as Diary of a Lady Gardener, commented:
“It’s a real dream come true to be exhibiting at such a prestigious show, especially when the key message is focused around something so close to my heart. I’ve had the idea since I first visited the show in 2020 and so to be accepted for a show allotment earlier this year was just the most surreal moment.
"I’ve started sowing and growing a multitude of plants in preparation for the show, and am incredibly excited to be working with the incredible team at Plastic Free North Devon to bring the vision to life and spread their crucial messages and educational materials to a wider audience. Roll on the 4th July where we can share our exciting plans and see the drawings come to life!”
Shannon is a 26-year-old from North Devon who has had an allotment site in Braunton for three and a half years.
She is the face behind an Instagram account with 28k followers @diaryofaladygardener, a successful podcast and flowers/veg growing workshops across North Devon.
The show takes place between 4th July to 9th July 2022 and features the RHS Hampton Court Palace allotments.
Claire Moodie, CEO of Plastic Free North Devon and amateur gardener said:
“We are so thrilled to be asked to partner on this project. The combination of Shannon’s gardening talent and passion to help protect and improve our planet will result in something very special. We hope the legacy of her creation will help more people recognise what nurturing plants and nature in a simple, organic, non-toxic and plastic free way does for our physical, mental and collective planetary health. It's a simple and broadly accessible thing that we could all be doing more of.”
The show takes place between 4th July to 9th July 2022 and features the RHS Hampton Court Palace allotments, a new feature for 2021 focused around the community.
