Repair Cafe Skills Workshops

A great time was had by attendees and volunteers alike at our latest round of Skills Workshops at YMCA South Molton and Barnstaple Pannier Market this June.

The aim of the Skills Workshops are for our amazing repair volunteers to share what they know, pass on their knowledge and help others reduce their impact on the environment one repair at a time!

At South Molton the Repair Cafe volunteers helped members of the public to learn to crochet, make morse bags and learn some basic sewing skills. 

Whilst at Barnstaple Skills Workshop the Repair Cafe volunteers worked with Flourishing Barnstaple to create bunting and musical instruments for the upcoming Barnstaple Carnival alongside a fantastic drumming workshop from Black Wall Street London.

It was a busy day with lots of learning and fun had by all.

UPCOMING SKILLS SHARING

So far this year, we have also hosted a skills workshop in Ilfracombe at Delta. Due to its success, the fabulous Ilfracombe Repair Cafe team will be actively promoting ‘skills sharing’ at all of their future Repair Cafes. On Sunday 21st July 11am-2pm, you can learn sewing skills, knitwear & visible mending as well as bike repairs! If you have any questions, please email info@earthrepairshop.org

Our Repair Cafe network is made possible by our fantastic host venues, stakeholders and of course, our incredible volunteers and the local community.

Thanks to funding from the Post Code Lottery and NatureSave funding and previous funding from National Lottery Together For Our Planet Community Fund, and the support of North Devon towns and villages, we currently have repair cafes in Landkey, Braunton, South Molton, Ilfracombe, and Barnstaple.

sustainable community groups

In order to create real change we, at PFND, feel it is important to make environmental protection and sustainability an intrinsic part of how communities operate and have started a pilot project: Sustainable Community Groups to try to make this happen. 

As a starting point we have been working with Woolacombe and Saunton Surf Life Saving Clubs on how to get this started with Sustainability Officers being appointed to each club, environmental policies being put in place and messaging being sent out to members to name but a few of the actions.  (Click on the links to see on their websites).

We are really encouraged with how each club has taken up the project and will be looking forward to seeing what new ideas and actions can be put into place in the future. 

Once the pilot project is complete we will be looking at how to expand the project further and how other community groups can replicate what has been done.
