CAMPAIGN SUCCESS FOR BRAUNTON COMMUNITY AGAINST TESCO AND COSTA - Press Release

The local community, spearheaded by local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon (PFND), said NO to the installation of a Costa Express machine in Braunton Tesco - and they listened.

The grassroots campaign asking Tesco to backtrack on their decision to install a Costa Express in the Braunton store at Velator has succeeded, seemingly against the odds.

The community petition and press release, launched by PFND after Tesco maintained they would be going ahead with the installation despite the charity’s concerns around the environmental impact and effect on local businesses, triggered a U-turn.

Two days after the launch of the campaign, Tesco responded to press enquiries:

“...having listened to the views of the wider community at Braunton, we’ve reviewed our plans and won’t be installing a machine in this Superstore.”

Claire Moodie, CEO Plastic Free North Devon, shares her response to the news:

“This is amazing news and something we didn't expect so soon. Our small coastal village challenged the decision of two huge multi-national corporations - and won!

We hope that this decision will also serve to inspire and empower other communities to stand up for what they believe in.

Thank you to all the local businesses and community members who supported this campaign and we look forward to continuing to work with you to support local business, improve our environment, and support sustainable behaviour change - watch this space.”
