EDUCATION AND OUTREACH COORDINATOR

Hours: 24 hours a week. 

Fixed Term: 8 months (until end of July 2023 subject to funding)

Salary: £31,200 pro rata (based on 40 hrs a week)

Based: Braunton Office and some home working

Accountable to: CEO Claire Moodie

Holiday entitlement: 20 days per year pro rata plus bank holidays

Pension: 3% employers, 5 % employees

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary 

To plan, develop, coordinate, deliver and evaluate Plastic Free North Devon’s KS3 Educational Outreach programme  across North Devon.

Job Role

The Education and Outreach Coordinator will be the leading light for our pilot Ocean Explorer Education programme.  This aims to develop an active cohort of engaged young people working for the benefit of nature by providing a pathway to learn in nature, by building a school eco club network and through connecting with other community conservation organisations. Coordinating and delivering our educational offering, the candidate will be an energetic and engaging individual with a desire to take young people from 3 local schools on a journey to develop their skills, ignite passion and build a network of support within our community which empowers and supports them to take action. 

The ideal candidate will be an advocate for connecting young people to the natural world and have a desire to encourage passion in young people. They will be a confident, motivated and engaging communicator with good organisational skills, ready and willing to inspire. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of 3 school eco clubs, work to establish inter-school eco club links and run an end of year environmental conference for project schools.

  • Build and nurture positive working relationships with school staff. 

  • Refresh existing  and create new, educational resources and activities.

  • Refine and deliver engaging in-school presentations.

  • Organise and deliver regular field trips for small groups of students

  • Plan and deliver up to 10 snorkel safaris to Lundy MPA.

  • Plan and deliver an end of year conservation-residential trip for up to 12 students to Lundy Island.

  • Build links and coordinate activities with local environmental organisations to provide support to field trips and extra mutual conservation volunteering opportunities for programme students. 

  • Work with selected  pupils to inform the development of future KS4 programmes. 

  • Work with PFND volunteer coordinator to provide volunteering opportunities in house and external opportunities for students

  • Set up and run project management  databases to keep track of the project (including bookings and relationships).

  • Conduct ongoing reporting and evaluation of individual sessions

  • Conduct project impact assessment to inform future planning and funding bids.

  • Liaise with PFND communications team to support wider communications activities. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Requirements

  • Extensive experience in the education setting

  • A clear, confident and engaging communicator to both young people and adults

  • Ability to demonstrate good understanding of the environmental crisis we face locally, nationally and internationally, and what local and national environmental campaigns are currently in action 

  • Excellent  understanding of nature connection and the importance of this within the curriculum,  and the need to deepen the connection between social and environmental issues

  • Excellent planning, time management, prioritisation and organisational skills 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team 

  • Strong self leadership skills with ability to take initiative and lead the project.

  • Proficient user of technology with good knowledge of google and microsoft applications

  • Flexible approach with a willingness to work outside normal hours if necessary.

  • Ability to travel independently including use of own car.

  • A deep interest in the environment

Desirable qualities

  • Bachelors education degree, PGCE or equivalent

  • Associated qualifications and/or experience in the environmental conservation sector

  • Local wildlife knowledge
